MITALI SONAR

Mitali Sonar is a Indian classical dancer and teacher based in New York. She graduated with a M.A. in performing arts administration from NYU Steinhardt and has been working with organizations in the US with a goal of making Indian classical arts a household name for new audiences.

Mitali received formal Kathak training under Rajendra Chaturvedi (India) and Guru Prashant Shah (US). She has performed at various stages in India and in the US. Most recently, she played one of the lead characters in Navatman’s Mahabharata, a dance-theatre film.

Mitali has also coupled her Kathak training with sutradhari theater (storytelling

using hand gestures), Bollywood dance, contemporary dance and kalarippayattu.

Over the past few years, Mitali has been an active member of various New-York based events like the New York Kathak Festival, Drive East & Kathak Meet-ups. She has previously worked with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater & NYU Skirball Center for Performing Arts.

She is passionate about bringing communities together through the medium of arts (and about coffee, photography and dogs!)
